France: New Decree on the Protection of Employees During Heat Waves
On 27th May 2025, a decree was issued placing new obligations on employers to take certain measures to protect their employees during heatwaves. This will take effect on 1st July 2025.
All companies are obliged to evaluate the possible impact of heatwaves on their employees and, in case they identify a possible issue, take necessary measures. This includes adapting working hours and providing heat-reduction equipment and sufficient cold drinking water.
This decree, for the first time, requires employers to ensure that the workplace is not too hot. Until now, there was only an obligation to ensure the workplace was sufficiently heated.
In case of non-compliance, the Labour Inspector can place the company on notice, and it will have 8 days to respond.
