Poland: From the beginning of 2019, the ban on trading on Sundays and holidays became even more restrictive

The aforementioned act on limitation of trading aims to completely ban trading on Sundays and holidays from January 1st 2020. During the period form introduction of the act to 2020, trading on Sundays and holidays is not completely banned, but seriously limited. From March 1st 2018 to December 31st 2018 trade was allowed on the first and last Sundays of each calendar month. Starting from January 1st 2019, it is only allowed on the last Sunday of each calendar month.

The act includes a list of 32 points containing exceptions to the trade ban. Due to this wide catalogue, some shopkeepers tend to evade the ban. As a result, a novelization of the act, concerning the long list of exceptions, has been proposed. The proposed amendments apply to postal activities carried out in commercial establishments, as the exception for post offices has become one of the most frequently used way to evade the ban on trading on Sundays.
