Romania: 30.000 working permits for foreign workers in 2020

According to Decision No. 968/2019, the maximum number of new working permits that are authorised to be issued in 2020 for foreign workers (meaning workers outside the EU and EEC) is 30.000. This is the highest initial maximum contingent established at the beginning of a calendar year, to date.

Beginning in 2019, the working permits are no longer differentiated according to the type of workers. In 2019, the initial approved contingent of 20.000 foreign workers was reached by August. As a result, the Government of Romania authorised an additional 10.000 working permits to be issued. Over the past several years, due to the high demand, the maximum number of working permits approved to be issued have steadily increased.

The government is hopeful that the higher number of working permits approved for 2020 will benefit those industries that are currently understaffed.
