France: The Newly Formed Government’s Labour and Social Projects

Author: Olivier Kress

Emmanuel Macron was re-elected President of France on the 24th of April 2022 and the months of May and June saw his second term Ministers be appointed and the legislative elections take place. Many of the newly formed governments’ projects are labour law related or pertain to social matters. Wealth/purchasing power and the distribution of value within companies are topics that are considered a priority. Amongst these potential changes is the very controversial retirement reform, which would, amongst other things, gradually delay the age at which employees can retire (retirement age may be set at 65). The legal regime governing welfare benefits may also be modified. It is, for instance, possible that the minimum income scheme (“revenu de solidarité active” or “RSA”) will become contingent upon the carrying out of an effective activity by its beneficiary.
