Maximum Workplace Temperatures

A regulation setting maximum temperature limits in the workplace and defining the related obligations of employers has been published. The new provisions will enter into force on 11 January 2027.

The temperature may not exceed the following limits (unless this is not possible due to technological requirements):

• 35 °C (308 K) in indoor workplaces;
• 32 °C (305 K) for outdoor work involving physical exertion resulting in an effective energy expenditure during a work shift of more than 1500 kcal (6280 kJ) for men and more than 1000 kcal (4187 kJ) for women.

Even before these maximum thresholds are reached, employers will be required to take the following measures:

• where the temperature in a workplace exceeds 28 °C or 25 °C in the case of work involving significant physical exertion, the employer must implement technical solutions to reduce or limit further increases in temperature (unless prevented by technological requirements) or introduce appropriate organisational measures to minimise the impact of high temperatures on employees;
• for work performed outdoors, where the temperature exceeds 25 °C, the employer must implement appropriate organisational measures to minimise the adverse effects of heat on employees’ health, taking into account the specific working conditions and the nature of the work performed.
